New Beach Club Approved
At yesterday's Town Council meeting, Board members approved with a 3-to-2 vote a permit for the building and operation of a new beach club called Oak Island Club. To be located at 604 Ocean Drive where a motel is currently on site, the club submitted its conditional-use application prior to the Town's moratorium on beach clubs in general. According to the club's owner, construction will take approximately a year, and, once open, the club will serve food and alcohol with an upscale style. It will be open to the public but also offer a high-ticket membership. Beyond that, details remain to be revealed. More...

Yaupon Beach Fishing Pier - Efforts Continue
At the Tuesday meeting this week (December 11), the Oak Island Town Council voted 4-1 to continue efforts toward the purchase of the pier without actually spending any of the Town's money. The Council authorized the mayor and town attorney to pursue outside funding for the pier and to continue working with State Representative Bonner Stiller to apply for grants and state funding, a plan that Stiller proposed recently to facilitate the purchase of the pier.

Oak Island's Christmas Parade
The 22nd Christmas-by-the-Sea Festival Parade launched the two-week long array of showcase events in and around the Oak Island/Southport area. Oak Island's tree lighting occurred last Saturday along with a gingerbread workshop at the community center in Boiling Spring Lakes, and the Southport Parade of Homes, another of the festivities, occurs on December 8th from 2 pm to 7 pm (contact the Southport Chamber of Commerce for details), but these are only a few of the holiday activities.
