Oak Island Clerk Says Goodbye Pat Brunell is retiring after more than 20 years as clerk for the Town of Oak Island. She started out applying for a position as a water clerk for the Town of Long Beach in 1986. When she started, the town had just completed a sewer study, there was buzz of a second bridge and Johnie Vereen was mayor. She was 1 of about 50 employees and there were about 1,800 residents in the town. Yaupon Beach and Long Beach merged in 1999, and today the Town of Oak Island’s population is close to 9,000. Brunell joined the NC Association of Municipal Clerks and the International Association. Meeting and networking with others helped her keep up with changes in the law and the newest ways to properly maintain records. She also adopted a beach access and served as an access parent, making sure the area was clean and there were plenty of plastic bags for dog-walkers. More...
